Robert Rummel-Hudson, author of Schuyler's Monster, faces what every parent fears the most. His daughter suffers from a neurological disorder that prevents her from ever speaking. Clearly, his child must attend school. This is going to be a struggle for someone who cannot speak, but everyone must learn. There must be a way. I've never read the book, but I found something interesting that I feel would be useful to Miss Schuyler and others who cannot speak.
The AutoVerbal is a device in which speaks for you. Currently, it is only available through iphones, and ipads. However, this needs to be something that needs to be available on computers for those who cannot speak. The AutoVerbal allows for the most simply phrases to be said through a speaker on the device. It also allows a person to type what they would want to say and the speaker would rely that message allowed. They have male voices for men and female for women. You can also make the buttons bigger or smaller for the visually impaired.
This device is something that could be very useful in the school systems. Every person deserves equal learning opportunity. The school system should provide this chance for those who are disabled.
